The pigment color is derived from pigments such as melanin, carotene, and porphyrin, whereas the structural color is derived from the lattice structure of melanin rods and amorphous air holes. We previously analyzed the feather coloring mechanisms in jay, parakeet, peacock, and pigeon and demonstrated that color development results from a combination of pigment color and structural color.
