We conducted a questionnaire survey of persons who attended a public lecture at the Yamazaki University of Animal Health Technology. The questionnaire focused on awareness of the Act on Welfare and Management of Animals and perceptions of microchips as a means of identifying animals' owners. Attendees from the community emphasized ownership claritification and purpose of the law significantly more than did student attendees. Many attendees reported that microchips are an appropriate method of identifying individual dogs and cats. A microchip mandate is currently being debated as a revision to the law. It is necessary to clarify the factors that might impede popularization of microchips and promote the benefits of microchips, especially to owners.
